Postpartum care for the mother
- Get plenty of rest. This is the most important thing you can do to help your body recover. Sleep when your baby sleeps, and take naps during the day.
- Eat a healthy diet. Eat nutritious foods to give you the energy you need to care for your baby and yourself. Make sure to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- Drink plenty of fluids. It is important to stay hydrated, especially if you are breastfeeding. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.
- Take care of your perineum. This is the area between your vagina and rectum. If you have stitches, keep them clean and dry. You may also want to use ice packs or sitz baths to relieve pain and swelling.
- Listen to your body. Don’t push yourself too hard. If you are feeling tired or overwhelmed, take a break.
Postpartum care for the baby
- Feed your baby on demand. This means feeding your baby whenever they are hungry. Most newborns need to eat 8-12 times per day.
- Change your baby’s diaper often. This will help prevent diaper rash.
- Bathe your baby regularly. You can bathe your baby every day or every other day.
- Put your baby to sleep on their back. This will help reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
Other important things to keep in mind
- See your doctor for postpartum checkups. Your doctor will check your recovery and answer any questions you have.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your partner, family, and friends can all help you care for your baby and yourself.
- Take care of your mental health. It is normal to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or sad after childbirth. If you are struggling, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.
Additional tips for post-pregnancy and child care
- Find a support group for new mothers. This can be a great place to connect with other mothers and share experiences.
- Take a postpartum yoga class. Yoga can help you strengthen your body and reduce stress.
- Get some exercise. Once your doctor has cleared you, start exercising gradually. Exercise can help you improve your mood, lose weight, and reduce your risk of postpartum depression.
- Don’t be afraid to say no to visitors. It’s important to give yourself time to recover and bond with your baby.
- Enjoy this special time with your new baby! It goes by fast!
